As some of you may know, I am the director of a feature-length documentary film about the Linotype type casting machine. About a year ago, I partnered up with two good friends on a journey to document the Linotype and the people who love these crazy machines. After 45 interviews and 26 separate shoots, we have amassed an amazing collection of footage telling the surprisingly emotional and fascinating story of the Linotype.

“Linotype: The Film” Official Trailer from Linotype: The Film on Vimeo.

Called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by Thomas Edison, the Linotype revolutionized printing and society, but very few people know about the inventor, Ottmar Mergenthaler, or his fascinating machine. The Linotype brought about a revolution in literacy and communication as dramatic as the internet today. To read a much more in-depth history of the Linotype, you can read my article in Codex #1.

The film tells the story of the people connected to the Linotype and how it impacted the world. We have discovered that the Linotype was more than just a machine – it was a career, a skill, and a passion. Even in the face of modern technology, many still believe it to be the best way to create beautiful typography.

Support the film on Kickstarter and read more at I Love Typography!

Cam Wrigley’s Words:

‘I travelled to Japan in May of 2011 to witness the aftermath of the tsunami that devestated the Tohoku region on March 11th, and to hear the personal stories of those who were affected by it.

By the time I left for Japan, more than two months had passed since the earthquake. In Canada, news of the Japanese disaster was limited to infrequent reports on the progress (or lack thereof) being made at the Fukushima nuclear plant. It bothered me that the plight of the thousands of displaced people in other areas was largely being ignored in the mainstream media.

This was my first documentary project. It was the most challenging thing I’ve done in my life, but I was inspired by the resilience, dignity, and kindness I witnessed in the shelters and by the people involved in the recovery effort.’

IF A TREE FALLS: A STORY OF THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT is the remarkable story of the group’s rise and fall, told through the transformation and radicalization of one of its members, Daniel McGowan. Part coming-of-age tale, part cops-and-robbers thriller, the film interweaves a chronicle of McGowan facing life in prison with a dramatic investigation of the events that led to his involvement with the ELF. Using never-before-seen archival footage and intimate interviews — with cell members and with the prosecutor and detective who were chasing them — IF A TREE FALLS asks hard questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism.

The Reason? In America, the company hopes to tap into a huge natural gas reservoir dubbed the Saudi Arabia of natural gas. Halliburton developed a way to get the gas out of the ground—a hydraulic drilling process called fracking—and suddenly America finds itself on the precipice of becoming an energy superpower.

But what comes out of the ground with that natural gas? How does it affect our air and drinking water? GASLAND is a powerful personal documentary that confronts these questions with spirit, strength, and a sense of humor. When filmmaker Josh Fox receives his cash offer in the mail, he travels across 32 states to meet other rural residents on the front lines of fracking. He discovers toxic streams, ruined aquifers, dying livestock, brutal illnesses, and kitchen sinks that burst into flame. He learns that all water is connected and perhaps some things are more valuable than money.

The Bully Project is the first feature documentary film to explore “a year in the life” of bullying in the United States. From the first day of school through the last, The Bully Project intimately follows the lives of a few of the many courageous kids and families bullying has affected this past year. The film captures the distress of bullying victims, the frustration of their parents, and in some cases, the overwhelming grief when bullying ends a life.

The Bully Project shows how we’re all affected by bullying—whether we’ve been victims, perpetrators or stood in silent witness, with the goal of catalyzing positive change.
