This 8 minute experimental film was featured in a collaborative exhibition between the National Museum of the American Indian in New York and the Heard Museum in Phoenix Arizona. The exhibit was on display from October of 2007 though September 2008. The film was projected on a wall in HD and surrounded with walls decorated with skateboard decks from the last 10 years. This film is a personal portrait of 2 incredibly adaptive cultures, one very ancient and one still evolving, yet both are indigenous to North America. Skateboarding and Native American Culture.

The Apaches portrayed in this film are White Mountain Apache Scouts of the 1880′s, and they are depicted by young Skateboarders from the community of Whiteriver on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. The footage spans the last 15 years of skateboarding on the Reservation, and depicts a very specific group of skateboarders that have grown up in the same culture and environment. This is an effort to portray two fluid cultures in constant motion.

The REMIX exhibit featured the works of 15 indigenous artists.

What do you get when you put together afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and rap pioneers De La Soul? You get Fela Soul; a musical tapestry created by Gummy Soul artist Amerigo Gazaway. More than just a clever title, Fela Soul is an 8-track, 33 minute journey into the world of afrobeat rhythms, funky horn riffs, and classic hip-hop gems. Using dozens of hand-picked samples from the Nigerian instrumentalist and political figure Fela Kuti, and 8 carefully-chosen acapellas from the Native Tongue rap trio De La Soul, Amerigo seamlessly intertwines the two into something completely new and original.

Reporting from the BBC:

Hackers have targeted the website of a San Francisco transport company that turned off mobile masts to prevent protests outside its stations.

Public anger towards the Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) had been fermenting since July when transit police shot dead a man who was carrying a knife.

BART disconnected its transmitters in a bid to quell planned demonstrations.

Hacker group Anonymous retaliated by attacking myBART.org, and releasing users’ personal information.

The hackers posted details of over 2,000 myBART users online.

Mobile users on the BART network were completely cut off while protests were allegedly being organised
In a typically-worded statement, the hacking group said: “We are Anonymous, we are your citizens, we are the people, we do not tolerate oppression from any government agency.

“BART has proved multiple times that they have no problem exploiting and abusing the people.”

BART’s main website, BART.gov, was left unaffected.

However, myBART.org – which carries offers and extra services for passengers – was defaced and, as of Monday, remained offline.

Led by visual artist, Tine Bech, from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), and scientist Dr Kathryn Harkup, of the University of Surrey, young people from Hampshire, Kent and Surrey have been discovering a new way to explore youth culture – and challenge society’s perception of it – through the science and art of light.

The LightTAG project offered workshops in Southampton, Staines, Farnham, Guildford, Hounslow and Canterbury where participants were taught how coloured LED lights could create light drawings and animations through an innovative camera technique to produce vibrant pieces of art.
The scheme will reach its climax at a launch event at the BFI on 11 February 2011 before beginning a tour of galleries in the South East.

Tine Bech said: “LightTAG has been a fantastic experience for everybody involved. The young people who participated have created a really visually engaging project.

“One of the project goals is to show youth culture in a positive light and increase the visibility of young peoples’ voices, which I think we’ve achieved.”

LightTAG is a collaboration between UCA, the University of Surrey and the South East Physics Network (SEPnet). LightTAG worked with groups of young people who are either: care leavers; disabled; not in education; employment or training and who live within reach of SEPnet universities.

The project has enabled over 55 young people from six communities to build confidence and achievement through a unique science and media art collaboration.

Tine added: “We often forget that universities don’t just award degrees but connect with communities, with businesses and in this case with young people. We are not an exclusive community for the few, but engaging with society in many innovation ways – LightTAG is just one of them.”
Young people and the public will also have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities on the 12February, including an LED Throwie event at 5pm that will see hundreds of LEDs light up London’s skyline.
