YouTube 180 Degree Rule (Film Language Glossary)

The 180° rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another . When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle. Reversing the angle is commonly thought to be disorienting and can distract the audience from the intent of the scene. The 180 degree rule is not a law, many notable filmmakers intentionally cross the line to achieve a desired effect that might support the stories narrative.

British Government Discuss Limiting Social Media

2011 London RiotsLONDON — British officials and representatives of Twitter, Facebook and BlackBerry met Thursday to discuss voluntary ways to limit or restrict the use of social media to combat crime and periods of civil unrest, while trying to dodge charges of hypocrisy and censorship that trailed Prime Minister David Cameron’s call to restrict use of the networks after this month’s riots.

Linotype: The Film

Written by Doug Wilson

As some of you may know, I am the director of a feature-length documentary film about the Linotype type casting machine. About a year ago, I partnered up with two good friends on a journey to document the Linotype and the people who love these crazy machines. After 45 interviews and 26 separate shoots, we have amassed an amazing collection of footage telling the surprisingly emotional and fascinating story of the Linotype.

“Linotype: The Film” Official Trailer from Linotype: The Film on Vimeo.

Called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by Thomas Edison, the Linotype revolutionized printing and society, but very few people know about the inventor, Ottmar Mergenthaler, or his fascinating machine. The Linotype brought about a revolution in literacy and communication as dramatic as the internet today. To read a much more in-depth history of the Linotype, you can read my article in Codex #1.

The film tells the story of the people connected to the Linotype and how it impacted the world. We have discovered that the Linotype was more than just a machine – it was a career, a skill, and a passion. Even in the face of modern technology, many still believe it to be the best way to create beautiful typography.

Black Wave: Multimedia Photoessay About Japanese Tsunami

Produced by Cam Wrigley a  freelance photographer living in Nanaimo, Canada.

Cam Wrigley’s Words:

‘I travelled to Japan in May of 2011 to witness the aftermath of the tsunami that devestated the Tohoku region on March 11th, and to hear the personal stories of those who were affected by it.

By the time I left for Japan, more than two months had passed since the earthquake. In Canada, news of the Japanese disaster was limited to infrequent reports on the progress (or lack thereof) being made at the Fukushima nuclear plant. It bothered me that the plight of the thousands of displaced people in other areas was largely being ignored in the mainstream media.

This was my first documentary project. It was the most challenging thing I’ve done in my life, but I was inspired by the resilience, dignity, and kindness I witnessed in the shelters and by the people involved in the recovery effort.’

Transport Company Disables Mobile Masts to Prevent Protests

Is all digital communication controlled by special interests?

Reporting from the BBC:

Hackers have targeted the website of a San Francisco transport company that turned off mobile masts to prevent protests outside its stations.

Public anger towards the Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) had been fermenting since July when transit police shot dead a man who was carrying a knife.

BART disconnected its transmitters in a bid to quell planned demonstrations.

Hacker group Anonymous retaliated by attacking myBART.org, and releasing users’ personal information.

The hackers posted details of over 2,000 myBART users online.

Mobile users on the BART network were completely cut off while protests were allegedly being organised
In a typically-worded statement, the hacking group said: “We are Anonymous, we are your citizens, we are the people, we do not tolerate oppression from any government agency.

“BART has proved multiple times that they have no problem exploiting and abusing the people.”

BART’s main website, BART.gov, was left unaffected.

However, myBART.org – which carries offers and extra services for passengers – was defaced and, as of Monday, remained offline.

Short Filmed Interview with Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall was one of the first photographers to really inspire me. In 2006 I visited the Tate Modern in London to see a retrospective of his photographic work. To this day I remeber the moment I felt that I had discovered photography for the the first time, his work gave me a new respect for the art form.

View more of his work and read some of his essays at MoMA.org

Youth-produced Documentary about the Dream Act

The Teen Producers Project at San Diego Media Arts Center produced this documentary on the evolution of the Dream Act legislation and the youth movement to get it passed.

“To have the grades… I’ve done so much community service, what did I do wrong? Why do I not deserve to go where I want to go? You did the same thing as the person right next to you since 5th or 6th grade. They’ll go off and be happy with their lives. And you can’t do that.”
